E-Mail services

Gmail, our TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner, includes excellent spam protection, phishing warnings and virus scanning; ultimate organization, conversation view, POP3 access and 8 GB of inbox storage that continues to grow every day.

Additionally with Gmail you can chat, post documents and spreadsheets online, customize your homepage, get mobile access, check your RSS feeds, be notified every time you receive a new message and your account never expires. However, Gmail is like an exclusive club, you have to be invited to join.

The era of MSN Hotmail has come and gone. Microsoft put their best and brightest behind the retooling of Hotmail to give Google and Yahoo! a run for their money with Windows Live our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner. They offer a whopping 25 GB of inbox storage and have intuitive spam filtering, virus scanning and inbox organization. When you take account of the many extras like Windows Live Messenger, online data storage with SkyDrive, and the various data and recreational services available from Microsoft, Live makes simple Hotmail 1.0 look like an antiquated 8-track player. If you’re a longtime Hotmail devotee, Windows Live allows you to keep your old Hotmail or MSN ID while also offering a new and improved feature set. Windows Live is fast, easy to use, and integrates beautifully with Microsoft’s web and software empire. The huge feature set and extras associated with a Windows Live account compare only to Google’s in terms of functionality and all-around usability.

Yahoo! free email leapt head first into Web 2.0 with their most recent retooling of Yahoo! mail. With unlimited inbox storage, seamless integration with the Yahoo! web empire and the everyday functionality of a professional email client, Yahoo! deserves our TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award. Like most web based clients, Yahoo! offers so much more than an inbox. Between MyYahoo, Flickr, video chat, and a slew of productivity tools, Yahoo! is a luxury information management suite we can heartily recommend.

All of America can be online now with the veteran email provider— AOL. The new AOL includes some of the best spam filtering and virus scanning available. Additionally, your free AOL account allows you to download AOL’s Safety and Security Suite in association with McAfee. Many of the services you enjoyed with AOL as your ISP are now available free, no matter who your Internet provider is.

AOL’s free email unlimited inbox storage, image blocking, download restrictions, your choice of HTML or plain text composer, IMAP access and plenty of extras, including your choice of personalized domain names. AOL is restricted on customized filters and there is no email sorting.

FastMail is an easy and proficient free email service. It provides effective security features and is great for someone looking for a secure email service without the bells and whistles. As FastMail states in there FAQ section, “We’re much more concerned with adding more features, than making everything pretty.”
FastMail has a spam filter, phishing protector and virus scanner; and if spam happens to slip through you can easily report it. FastMail includes an HTML and plain text composer. Additionally, it has IMAP access. Although FastMail does not have black/white lists you can easily customize up to 100 filters to keep unwanted mail out of your inbox.
You can choose from a very small list of domain names if you don’t like @fastmail.fm; however, their choices aren’t nearly as fancy as Mail.com’s or Care2.
FastMail only allows 10 MB of inbox storage, which is considerably less than most email providers. Although FastMail includes online storage, they only allow you about 1 MB of space. This is the equivalent to a few emails and maybe an attachment.
FastMail is great if you are looking for a no–frills email service with strong security; however, if you would like a similar service with additional inbox and online storage see the #2 provider, Windows Live.

Inbox.com shines as a diamond in the rough amongst many lackluster online email services. Their exceptionally easy–to–use interface and email service stood out compared to many of the leading competitors. Inbox.com addresses all your email needs with 5GB of email storage, 20 MB attachment limit, 5 GB of free online storage, easy photo access and POP3 access. Additionally, you can read news, play games, send ecards and download screensavers.
Inbox.com is a solid email service, but ultimately doesn’t quite stack up to the integrated Web 2.0 functionality of Gmail, Yahoo! and Windows Live. We found Inbox.com to be an excellent email provider they do not include security for phishing attacks, and they lack some additional features like an instant messenger and mobile access.

Mail.com is a basic email program. It includes all the features an email service requires, and a few extras. Mail.com filters known spammers, including phishers, and tries very hard to prevent unwanted mail from reaching your inbox. Unfortunately, sometimes junk slips through. Mail.com allows you to report any spam that the filters don’t catch.
You can use a dozen customizable filters to help sort and organize your incoming mail. Additionally, you can establish black and white lists to block or allow specific addresses.
Mail.com includes a few practical extras like a calendar and notepad. Mail.com’s most unique feature is audio mail. You can have your mail read to you in a variety of languages, English, UK English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Japanese and more. Additionally, you can choose you domain name from a large selection of choices. If you do not want to be name@mail.com you can choose, @dublin.com, @techie.com, @europe.com, @doglover.com and many more.
We were pleased customer support returned our email in about a day.
While Mail.com is a practical and easy–to–use email service, they only offer 3 GB of inbox storage, there is no POP3 access and only includes a plain text composer. However, it does include spell check, unlike many other plain text composers.
The most frustrating aspect of Mail.com is the occasional pop–up ad. Although our browser filters stopped most of these, a few still made it through.

Lycos is a simple, easy–to–use free email service. Lycos provides 5 GB of email storage space. It has a spam filter with the choice of three strengths, “off,” “on” and “exclusive.” Exclusive spam filtering is the equivalent of using black/ white lists. Only address on your “White list” will be sent to your inbox. Lycos will also restrict automatic downloads and images for additional safety.
To organize you inbox you can create additional folders; however, Lycos does not allow you to set up custom filters to sort specific conversations or unwanted emails.
We found Lycos’ help section to be frustrating. While the FAQs answer many questions, the search feature would not produce relevant results for common terms like “virus.”
